In German-speaking areas (meaning higher education institutions in Germany, Switzerland and Austria), Gender Studies (understood as an umbrella concept for feminist and queer Women’s and Gender Studies) are institutionalised in a variety of forms.
The main pillars are:
- interdisciplinary institutions, centres,
coordinating offices of Gender Studies
- professorial chairs (partly) denominated
to Gender Studies
- Gender Studies programmes (Magister,
BA/MA)
- interdisciplinary certified study
priorities/foci and research studies
- PhD programmes (Graduiertenkollegs)
In addition, many academic and political networks as well as the creation of data banks, journals and libraries have supported the establishment of Gender Studies in the German-speaking areas.
