In German speaking areas it has been long controversial whether
Gender Studies should be merely integrated into existing disciplinary study
curricula or whether independent courses should be established. As a result,
independent Gender Studies degrees were established relatively late compared
to Anglo-American and Nordic countries. In 1997 the first Magister course
(including undergraduate and graduate studies as minor and major field) was
established at Humboldt-Universität Berlin. Simultaneously, at Carl von
Ossietzky-University Oldenburg the first minor and supplementary course started.
They were followed by two minor courses in Freiburg as well as Göttingen
and an MA and a minor course in Hamburg. As a result of the Bologna process,
additional BA/MA courses are currently set up. A list of the existing courses
